The Leavers’ Service for year 6 pupils going on to secondary education from St Peter’s C of E Primary School was introduced by the vicar, but the content of the service was put together by the children themselves. There were hymns, a reading and prayers. The recorder group and the handbell ringers contributed to the service, each under their leader Judy Dyer.

The Bishop of Penrith, the Rgt Rev Richard Garrard, presented Bibles to the leavers and in a talk gave them guide lines for their future Christian life, Those leaving were: Alexander Brabender, Russell Cooper, Anne Fell, Adam Fox, Rebecca Hartley, Amie Hodgkinson, Becky Inman, Simon Knight, Sarakay Martindale, Thomas Mason, Robert Matthews, Alasdair McHardy, Stuart Metcalfe, Steven Oversby, Joshua Rosser. Ross Stevenson, Bryony Shaw, Bruce Simm, Gary Singleton, Emma Stannard and Meghan Whelan.

During the service two retiring part-time teachers, Anne Pater and Ethna Davenport, were presented with baskets of flowers, and Mrs Fishes retiring head teacher, was presented with a Bible and she spoke about her happy time at the school, and she thanked the staff, the governors, the committees and the children and parents, and the whole school sang a specially composed song for Mrs Fisher The vicar also presented the Bishop, who is shortly to leave the diocese to take up an appointment in Rome, with a copy of a local book. Arthur Dewhurst played music to accompany the hymns.

The Bowling Club travelled to Holme and won 4-3. Heversham winners were Peter Shaw, Lee Askew and in the doubles Harry Hamer with Daphne Smith, and Shirley Askew with Beryl Corby. At home to Lower Holker the club lost 6-2 the two winners being Fred Walker and Los Askew. Fred Hall & Sons Ltd, builders of the new clubhouse, were then entertained in a friendly challenge match. The next visitors were Staveley in a return match Staveley winning 8-2 Fred Walker and John Smith being the only winners. The club then visited Arnside for an afternoon friendly match.

Finally, Bowness Seniors were entertained and won 6-2 with Muriel Hamer and doubles pairing Daphne Smith and Lea Askew winning for Heversham.
