Heversham Community News - 22nd June 2001

The last meeting of the season of the Milnthorpe-with-Heversham Mothers Union (MU) took place in St Peter’s Church. This took the form of a service of Holy Communion conducted by the Rev Jim Radcliffe and the readings were given by Mary Davidson and Brenda Gregory and the organist was Judy Dyer. After a short business meeting, afternoon tea was served to all the members.

Sunday morning’s celebration of Holy Communion was a special one when the Rev Philip Rumsey was the celebrant on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of his ordination. Mr and Mrs Ramsey moved to Heversham after he retired as vicar of Skelsmergh, Selside and Long Sleddale, and for a number of years Philip assisted on many occasions with services in St Peter’s Church.

The Bowling Club travelled to Allithwaite for its first match, a friendly doubles, winning by three games to one. Winning pairs were Eric Proctor and Cohn James, Shirley Askew and John Smith, Bruce Tyson and Peter Shaw. The friendly against Burton-in- Kendal was tied 5-5, and decided on aggregate, Burton winning 173-172. Holme Seniors B team was the first team to be entertained on the new bowling green. Holme won 5-2.
