Heversham Community News - 20th July 2001A wine tasting event was held in the Athenaeum organised by the Children’s Playground Working Group. Summer wines were available for tasting and a talk was given by Wine Time of Milnthorpe. Proceeds from the evening which were in the region of £300 are for the purchase of new equipment for the playground. Heversham St Peter’s junior handbell ringers with leader Judy Dyer played at the afternoon musical event hosted by the Westmorland Youth orchestra at Kendal Brewery Arts Centre. Another performance by the handbell ringers was given for parents and friends at Mrs Dyers home, and the junior ringers and St Peter’s Primary School recorder group are giving concerts for the residents at Heversham House and Plumtree Hall. The junior members taking part were Emma Stannard, Anne Fell, Joanna Swinbank, Douglas Parsons and James Hyman, in both groups, with the addition of Becky Inman and Rebecca Hartley in the handbell group and Jade Porter and Alasdair McHardy in the recorder group. Sunday morning’s service in St Peter's Church, led by Elizabeth Bennett, was special for a number of reasons. First, the service was attended by the Rev Vic Jackopson, president of the charity Hope Now which operates in the UK, America, South Africa, and the Ukraine, assisting the homeless and organising Evangalistic crusades. Rev Jackopeon gave a talk about some aspects of the charity’s work. A reading was given by Kath Fisher who is leaving the district and retiring after a number of years as head teacher at the Primary School. The vicar then commissioned and said special prayers for Rhona Rutter, Gill Shaw and Cynthia Wales who are shortly flying out to Toga where they will take charge of 30 children between one years and 17 years, while their regular carers are away at conferences. Members of the Milnthorpe, St Thomas’s congregation joined in the service which included the baptism of Milnthorpe baby Sophie Louise Adams. After the service many Heversham and Milnthorpe I members proceeded to the home of Mike and Anne Robinson in Beetham for a barbecue. There was also opportunity to enjoy the extensive garden with its many unusual plants. Proceeds from the event are for Heversham Church Funds.
