The first season of the Bowling Club was brought to a close when Levens were the visitors for the last friendly match of the season, which Levens won by 5-1. The green has now closed and the essential autumn work of deeply scarifying the green followed by hollow tining, overseeding and application of winter feed and top dressing has been carried out in preparation for next year.

There was a good attendance at the Snooker Club AGM held in the clubroom at The Athenaeum, Leasgill when chairman Bryan Sedgwick reviewed the past year. Membership had reduced and meter takings were down, however, pool table usage had increased. Bryan Sedgwick was re-elected chairman; Ronnie Messenger, treasurer; John Smith, secretary. The club welcomes new members both junior and senior.

Heversham St Peter’s CE Primary School Harvest Festival was held at St Peter’s Church. The children sang both traditional and modern harvest songs with great gusto. The pianist was Mr A. Dewhurst.

Head teacher, Mr T. Westwood, introduced the service with presentations from all four classes including pictures, poems and prayers as well as a thought provoking presentation about supporting local farmers through the present foot-and-mouth crisis.

Head boy, Oliver Dootson and head girl Joanna Swinbank read appropriate Bible passages and the Rev Canon J. Hancock blessed the children’s gifts and spoke about offering our own harvest to God in terms of our attitude and behaviour to others.

More than £130 was donated by the children towards the Bishop of Carlisle’s Harvest for the Hungry appeal to raise money for clearing land mines in Cambodia and supporting self perpetuating goat farming in India.
