HEVERSHAM Snooker Club AGM was held in the clubroom at
The Athenaeum
when chairman Bryan Sedgwick reviewed the year.
Membership and meter takings were up.
The club knockout competition played for the first time using a
handicap system was won by Richard Hesmondhalgh.
Bryan Sedgwick was elected chairman;
Ronnie Messenger treasurer
and John Smith secretary
DOROTHY and Trevor Williams with Jill and Pete Shaw were the
winning team at the village quiz night with buffet supper in
The Athenaeum.
Organised by Fran Skipworth assisted by helpers the
event raised £133 for bowling club funds.
BERYL Corby and Ross Dyer won the monthly bowling club robin
competition overcoming Marjorie Wall and Harry Hamer in the final.
Beryl and Ross reached the final by beating Daphne Smith and Fred
Walker in a group play-off.
THE minutes of the September meeting of the
parish council stated
that a small number of Jubilee mugs are still available at the post
office in exchange for a donation.
The first inspection of the playground has been carried out
and a copy of the report has been sent to the contractors, Playdale.
New gates are being made and will be in place for the official opening
next month.
The Leasgill Quarry Fund sub-committee’s recommendations for
grants were accepted by the council:
- Milnthorpe parish council will receive £2,700 for playground
fencing which replaces the 1999
award of £2,000 for CCTV.
- £200 for Milnthorpe Christmas on the Green Committee;
- £700 to Milnthorpe Steel Band for replacement of equipment;
- £900 to Heversham St Peter’s Church PCC for restoration
of the church clock;
- £500 to Heversham Parent and Toddler group for furniture;
- £150 to www.heversham.org for hosting a village website;
- and £20 to G. Handley for use of rooms.
The next council meeting is on
October 28.
A TEAM of local parents led by George Handley and
Ken Shepherd had a working day at
Heversham Jubilee Playground.
Work included hedge cutting, fencing, ground-clearing
and kerb-laying for tbe new gates now on order.
THE Athenaeum Committee was
disappointed by the small turnout for the AGM.
Chairman Carl Smith gave special thanks to Ruth Labsvirs,
retiring from the post of secretary, and to Margaret Rendell, in charge
of booking and cleaning.
The committee now consists of eight representatives of village
organisations and five officers.
Adele Shepherd continues as treasurer and reported that the
financial situation was healthy and bookings up by ten per cent.
It was decided that hire charges would remain unchanged for the
coming year.
