Tree pruning has been carried out on Princes Way and the corroded 30mph sign in the village has been reported to the Highway Authority. It was agreed that existing equipment on the children’s playground would be removed at a cost of £430 plus VAT, and at a meeting between councillors and the working party it was agreed to end fund-raising by December; funds stands at approximately £10,000. Plans for spending the money on refurbishment is to be brought before the January parish council meeting, and by March plans will be publicised and volunteers sought for a new group to develop the project further. Re-opening of the playground is planned for June to coincide with the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. The budget for 2002/2003 was considered based on an increased precept of £4,500, including extra money to cover the cost of the Queen’s Jubilee Celebrations (£1,000) and increased lighting costs (£880). The council voted in favour of giving mugs to children to celebrate the Jubilee rather than medals. The final cost of the refurbishment of St Mary’s Well will be £495 of which the council agreed to supplement the grant from Leasgill Quarry Fund by £195. The overgrown hedge to the west of the Low Road was again discussed and a resident has agreed to write to Cumbria County Council pointing out the damage roots may cause to the road, and the clerk will also raise the matter with the owners of the hedge.
