At the parish council meeting it was agreed that the whole of the children’s playground should be closed until refurbishment is complete.
One of the reasons for this was that the floor of the covered wagon is broken and it was felt that money should not be spent on repairs. The gates and equipment will be chained up and estimates will be obtained for clearing the site.

A number of ideas for the celebration of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee were discussed. It was agreed that refurbishment of the playground would be suitable together with commemorative mugs for children in the village.

The council will try to persuade Dallam School from removing recycling bins from its car park.

The chairman will write to the local MP (Tim Collins) stressing the necessity for early abolition of Council Tax Rebate on second homes.

A letter from SLDC requested that a new tree warden be appointed for the parish and it was agreed that Coun Handley should take this post. The clerk will ask Cumbria County Council if trimming of the trees on Princes Way is imminent.

The Bowling Club is already looking forward to the 2002 season and the club has been accepted to play in the South Lakeland Rural League. The club also hopes to join the Senior League and possible the Kendal and District League. Members are being invited to register their interest in being included for any of the above. Several matches are still to be played this season which will probably end on October 7. During winter it is proposed to hold indoor activities from October to March in the club house, which may include afternoon bridge sessions, and whist and dominoes. The club is looking for volunteers for a working party, on September 8 to carry out minor maintenance work.

Some of the congregation at Sunday morning’s service in St Peter’s Church came from places 300 miles away. It was the occasion of the baptism of James V. Riley whose parents, Martin and Laura, live near Aberdeen, while other members of the family came from the London area. James was baptised by his grandfather, the Rev Patrick Simpson who, on many occasions, has assisted the vicar, the Rev Canon John Hancock. The reading was given by Daniel Johnson and the prayers were led by Robin Orr, Rosie Robinson and Thomas Johnson.
