Heversham Community News - 4th January 2002St Peter’s Church was packed for the carol service on Christmas Eve. Before the service began the handbell ringers from the primary school played Christmas items, after which the vicar welcomed the congregation, and the choir began the service while the church was in darkness with the first two verses of Once in Royal David’s City, and the congregation took up the carol for the remaining verses. The service continued with old and new carols, and readings given by Anne Fell, Anna Rutter, Celia Whitton, Peter Clarke, John Sowerby, Sylvia Reed and the vicar. The choir sang unaccompanied and the others were sung with the instrumental group, and with the organ played by Arthur Dewhurst. On Christmas Day the vicar celebrated at Early Communion, and the main morning service, conducted by Roger Bingham, was again well attended. The Rev Ron Rutter was the celebrant and the vicar preached the sermon. Hymns were accompanied by Robin Orr at the organ and by the music group. The Leasgill (Monday) Badminton Club held its annual competition in the Athenaeum. Nine members took part resulting in Ross Winter taking the men’s trophy and Joanna Armer the ladies trophy.
